InsuranceTire Fire Management and RemediationStrum provided turnkey environmental management services following a tire fire at a former Military Base. The project involved rapid response to mitigate off-site migration of contaminated water. Air monitoring for toxic smoke in surrounding residences was also completed. Detailed Phase II/III assessments of contaminants in site soils and shallow and deep bedrock aquifers were undertaken, and hydrogeological modelling was completed. Project objectives included assessment of the site and off-site impacts, development of cost effective clean up methods, and attainment of Certificate of Compliance for closure. Remedial action plan preparation was undertaken along with RAP implementation involving excavation, water treatment and risk assessment. Water treatment involved lay out and pilot plant testing for treatment of 3 million gallons of impacted water by a joint venture partner, including plant set up and operation. Closure was attained after two years of monitoring with issuance of a Certificate of Compliance. The project involved coordination of team efforts between insurers, municipal and provincial governments, multiple federal government groups and public stakeholders.
