Biophysical Assessments

Strum provides a wide range of geological, biological and hydrogeological capabilities on projects for our development clients.  These capabilities work to ensure developers projects advance quickly amidst increasingly stringent environmental approval requirements.  Strum specialists are highly experienced at assessing and characterizing site conditions in fulfillment of these approval processes.

Biophysical assessments characterize the physical environment. Comprehensive studies involve research and documentation of a range of components including biological systems such as fauna, flora, mammals, bats and birds as well as geological considerations such as soils, bedrock and glacial morphology. Detailed delineation of streams and wetlands are routinely completed and evaluation of rare species and species at risk are undertaken. Strum will undertake detailed assessment of socioeconomic factors and archaeological history.  As well, Strum excels at compiling past site use records for assessment of contaminant related events or in development of water supply studies at sites for which central water supply is not available.

These evaluations are tailored to the regulatory regime involved. This may be dictated by physical dimensions of the site, through the nature of the proposed activity, by the use of Federal lands or funds or simply by location of the project.  Strum excels in submissions for either provincial or federal screening requirements and has comprehensive knowledge in navigating the approvals processes throughout Atlantic Canada.

Proactive advisory is of critical importance to our clients. Our input helps ensure well thought out projects, starting early in the planning stages. Projects that integrate development plans with environmental approvals early in the process proceed much more smoothly and cost effectively.
