Hazardous Materials AssessmentCommon building materials and commercial solvents and compounds often contain substances that are detrimental to human health and/or the environment – particularly items or materials of an older vintage. Examples of such substances include: Asbestos, Lead-based paints, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), Mercury, and Mould. Strum has extensive experience conducting HAZMAT surveys on a variety of structures such as schools, residential buildings, special care facilities, air force bases and industrial plants. Projects typically involve assessing and quantifying hazardous material on-site, and providing recommendations and management options. Strum field professionals are highly trained in identifying materials potentially containing asbestos and other hazardous materials and obtaining samples for confirmation purposes. Sampling involves obtaining a representative piece of the material of concern. During sampling activities, all precautions are taken to ensure that workers and building occupants are not exposed to potential fibre release from asbestos. Should hazardous materials be found to present a health threat, Strum can develop a removal and disposal protocol for the material that is both cost effective, and in compliance with legislative requirements. Strum routinely manages tender development coordination and supervises all aspects of contractor removals for clients. Sites include institutional locations, marine facilities, military installations, aircraft and other specialized applications.
