Acid Drainage Release Investigation

Strum coordinated the environmental approvals process in advance of a significant harbour infill project.  Requiring a Navigable Waters authorization and Department of Fisheries approval, Strum was retained to complete an extensive assessment to attain the approvals. A biophysical assessment was completed, requiring a detailed biologic assessment of the near shore and harbour floor environment. In addition, an Underwater Explosive Ordnance (UXO) survey was completed and transects were undertaken to form a long term baseline for follow up benthic monitoring. A federal environmental impact screening was triggered by both Fisheries and Navigable Waters. The submission was accepted by both Departments after thorough review by the regulators including Departments of Fisheries, Environment, Coast Guard and provincial authorities.

As part of the undertaking, a Fisheries compensation program was developed and negotiated on behalf of the client. A compensation project was identified, funding and contributions identified and the project was accepted. The project was completed in late 2007.  Approvals for a large scale marina development, channel dredge activities and causeway bridge construction for the same project are now underway.
